Per me è stato molto facile.
Ricevuta la prima e-sigaretta, l’ho provata incuriosito e la sera ho fumato un paio di sigarette (le “analogiche”, come vengono denominate). Il giorno dopo, un venerdì, ancora non mi ero attrezzato né avevo idea di cosa servisse per portarla “in giro”, quindi tutta una giornata lavorativa fumando normalmente (5 sigarette). Poi nel weekend, 2 sigarette in tutto, ovvero una dopo cena, veramente solo per la forte abitudine, perché per il resto l’attenzione era tutta per il nuovo “vaporoso attrezzo”.

Dal lunedì successivo, smesso completamente, senza neanche il desiderio represso di accenderne una. Oltretutto le ‘cartucce’ (che contengono il liquido che viene vaporizzato dall’atomizzatore) che usavo erano ad una media quantità di nicotina (18mg per ml) quindi ovviamente non c’era neanche l’interruzione drastica della sostanza principale da cui il fumatore è dipendente.

Che faccia smettere di fumare sigarette facilmente è sicuro, non è comunque detto che la sigaretta elettronica faccia smettere di assumere nicotina, qui sta all’individuo decidere di cominciare gradualmente a calare la presenza di nicotina. Volendo si può continuare a rimanere semplicemente “diversamente fumatori”.
Già la sola idea di evitare migliaia di sostanze nocive dovute alla combustione di tabacco, carta, etc.. già solo questo è un passo enorme. Poi svegliarsi bene la mattina, respirare bene, recuperare finalmente il senso dell’olfatto, non impuzzare ovunque e non creare fumo passivo, tutto questo non ha prezzo (a proposito di prezzo si spende anche di meno rispetto alle sigarette).

Nel caso foste intenzionati a provare, posso solo anticiparvi che è preferibile informarsi, seguire forum, anche solo per farsi consigliare un modello di e-cigarette adatto alle proprie esigenze ed abitudini.

Do you use it a lot, or maybe you’re a Forvo Editor?

I recently discovered, providing an Italian translation of their website, a nice and very useful “Bookmarklet” in their tools page; it’s a link you can simply drag into your browser Bookmarks toolbar. You have to simply select a word on a webpage, click that bookmark and you’re on Forvo’s add-word page.

I decided to make two more useful Bookmarklets:

1. Search word on Forvo (drag this on your Boormarks bar)

   and

2. Forvo User’s profile (drag this on your Boormarks bar)

1) Search word on Forvo: drag the above “Search word on Forvo” link to your browser Bookmarks bar. Select a word in any webpage, click the “Search word on Forvo” bookmark and a Forvo page about that word will appear, if the word exists, otherwise you’ll see a “Oops! There is no word“. NOTE: In case you didn’t select any text, a prompt window will ask to type the word to view on Forvo, I added this feature in case you simply want to quickly view a word on forvo and you don’t have it on a webpage; handy, isn’t it?
Of course this doesn’t involve Forvo Search features, it’s a straight lookup for a word page.

2) Forvo User’s profile: drag the above “Forvo User’s profile” link to your browser Bookmarks bar. Select the text relative to a probable forvo user in any webpage, click the “Forvo User’s profile” bookmark and a Forvo profile page about an existing user will appear, otherwise you’ll see a “Oops! There is no user“. NOTE: In case you didn’t select any text, which is more likely to happen rather than selecting any word you could find around the web, a prompt window will ask to type the Username to lookup on Forvo.

il progetto è molto interessante e ben studiato: si basa sul concetto di contenuto collaborativo (esempio tipico, Wikipedia) per cui ciascun utente registrato può contribuire sia all’aggiunta di parole sia alla loro pronuncia.

Casi tipici di fruizione:

1. cerco la parola “pizza“, la trovo tra i risultati, clicco sul link  e ascolto nelle varie lingue nel mondo come la pronunciano;
2. cerco una parola inglese ma non la trovo, quindi la aggiungo come nuova parola: a questo punto un utente inglese nota la parola in stato “pending”, in attesa, e registra la sua pronuncia (vengo avvertito via mail);
3. cerco una parola, la trovo nei risultati ma non nella lingua che desideravo; quindi nella pagina della parola, sulla colonna di destra clicco “Add languages” e richiedo la pronuncia per una lingua specifica (l’iter è come nel caso precedente)

nel resto dei casi, potrei essere un utente che contribuisce attivamente, quindi posso arricchire di parole e pronunce la mia madrelingua, aggiungendo per esempio parole per “categoria” (quindi indicandola nei “tag”). Esempio tipico, che hanno già seguito in molti perché è tra i primi a venire in mente, aggiungere piatti, vini, salumi, dolci, prodotti tipici italiani… oppure personaggi italiani, noti anche all’estero.

Tag:

Un consiglio che posso dare riguardo i “tag” è di indicarli in inglese quando la categoria è di comune interesse, per esempio “female/male first names” per i nomi di persona femminili e maschili. Indicarli invece in italiano, quando si tratta di argomenti specifici della nostra terra/cultura (ad es. “registi italiani”, “cinema”). Tutto il resto, un po’ nel dubbio, un po’ perché è di interesse comune interno/esterno, si può indicare con tag in entrambe le lingue: “vini”, “wines”.

La sfida della lingua Italiana

Sono un pigro da competizione, lo ammetto… ma appunto quando si tratta di “competizione” trovo energie inaspettate. Appena ho visto nell’elenco delle Lingue, l’Italiano in basso in basso come ranking di popolarità (numero di parole aggiunte) mi sono dato parecchio da fare, assieme ad altri utenti italiani. Ebbene da 4500 parole scarse, al tempo in cui approdai -poche settimane fa-, ecco il traguardo che ho avuto l’onore di raggiungere:

Italiano: raggiungimento 10000

Il prossimo “obiettivo” è superare la lingua Spagnola, al momento a 14.500 circa.

GAME CONTROLS

Use mouse to move left and right, left mouse click to throw the bowling ball.
You can apply a spin effect, so that ball will follow a curved trajectory: right after you’ve clicked to throw ball you can move mouse left/right to apply the spin. Just practice a bit, it’s easy and definitely useful.

Pause game: “P” or “Pause” key. This will pause and show the Options menu.
Options: you can turn off special graphical effects (such as motion blur, shading and color effects) if you see the game is not running smoothly on your PC or, in case, even lower render quality.

HOW TO PLAY

Basically you should throw your ball and hit people walking around, but not at random, you should follow a certain strategy to get good scores (explained further).

The first Level (At the Shopping Mall) is the crucial phase of the game, especially to determine the total score, while level 2 and 3, with less people walking around, are more to try to get a few more score with Spares or Strikes, plus each single person’s score is higher in 2 and 3 levels and no real crowd like in first level. By the way, scoring a Strike on level 1, however quite rare, is not impossible at all and in case next two scores include a high Combo you’ll get a pretty score.

Level 1 (At the Shopping Mall)
30 balls available
A lot of people (max 30 at the same time on screen)

Level 2 (Sidney - Opera House)
15 balls
A few people (max 15)

Level 3 (Rome - Circo Massimo)
10 balls
A very few people (max 7)

You can check the Achievements panel to figure out what the challenges are, in three difficulty levels Easy, Medium and Hard: it’s about reaching good scores, hitting a certain amount of total people, then score “combos and sequences”.

SCORES

Hitting a certain amount of people with a single throw is a Combo. Once you score a Combo, for instance, 7 people down, you will score 7000 (+ a few hit points), then you should score a higher combo to get more interesting scores.

For a good final score, it is essential to score Combos “progressively”: starting from lower to higher ones (hopefully following the Combo Sequences 1,2,3, etc..) since starting the game with a very high combo, let’s say 10, it’s an awful move since all lower combo points (1000, 2000, 3000 etc.) are gone.

Notice after Combo 10 (10000 pts worth) the next combos scores have a definitely lower value, this way:
1 = 1000,
2 = 2000,
…
9 = 9000,
10 = 10000,
11 = 1000,  <—
12 = 2000,
13 = 3000 etc..
Starting the game with a 11 combo is the worst opening ever

Spare and Strike:
You’ll notice a red triangle area fading out at the very start of the game; well that’s the spare/strike area:
if you hit 3 people or more and that area is clear (no people walking in) you’ll get a “Strike” otherwise (1 or 2 people) is a “Spare”.
Strike: next 2 throws score is doubled;
Spare: next throw score is doubled.

My WP was so outdated… upgrade to WP2.7 went smooth, too bad I had to keep deactivated 70% of my plugins. What hurts most is Gengo, for multilingual posts. Because I always had to hack it to make it work and transport current language via subdomain (”it.” for Italian and no subdomain for English).

And Ultimate Tag Warrior… useless since 2.3?? Aww… I can’t find a UTW to WP tags converter.

PROCEDURA DI DUETTO VIRTUALE

Tu e il tuo amico decidete chi fa cosa; ci sono fondamentalmente due Ruoli:

• il Mixer
• il Partner

Il Mixer (colui che esegue il mixage, il missaggio) dovrebbe avere una certa dimestichezza con alcune nozioni tecniche, almeno concetti base di registrazione audio e, in alcuni casi, anche sapere come modificare dei Midi e usare il software adatto. Dipende se volete solo divertirvi, tanto per provare, oppure se avete intenzioni di ricavarne un buon ‘prodotto finale’ orientandosi verso una registrazione semi-professionale: ovviamente l’esperienza del Mixer gioco un ruolo fondamentale in questo. Ma in ogni caso l’importante è che ci si diverta.

Il Partner del duetto dovrebbe solamente sapere come registrare la propria “traccia vocale”, da inviare poi al Mixer; tutto qui.

Procedura Generale

Fondamentalmente gli step del processo sono:

1. il Mixer e Partner si mettono d’accordo sulla canzone da cantare assieme e quindi cercano la base musicale (file midi o altro file audio) e si scambiano questo file, lo stesso identico file;
2. una scelta saggia è ricercare un file Midi, specialmente se il pezzo non è poi popolarissimo al punto che non si trova disponibile nessun file karaoke (per es. un file mp3/wav); in questo caso potrebbero anche mettersi d’accordo sulla tonalità -Key- della canzone (se il brano risulta troppo alto è possibile abbassare la base di tot semitoni). Anche il Tempo può essere variato, ma non tiriamo in ballo troppi elementi, poi è abbastanza infrequente;
3. il Mixer -dopo la scelta. dovrebbe cominciare a lavorare sulla base musicale con un programma di editing audio, modificando opportunamente il file Midi (nel caso degli mp3 o altro formato audio, non c’è molto da fare), cercando di farlo suonare bene;
4. il Mixer canta la sua parte e registra la prima traccia vocale (qui un software di registrazione ‘multitraccia’ è più che consigliato);
5. il Mixer esporta l’unione del sottofondo musicale con la propria voce, diciamo in mp3 (stereo e almeno 128 Kbps), dal Progetto audio contenente tutte le tracce. Non importa che sia estremamente raffinato nei suoni, va benissimo anche una ‘bozza audio’, l’importante è che la tonalità e il tempo della musica siano quelle prestabilite;
6. il Mixer invia il suo file bozza al Partner (via e-mail come allegato o un ‘Invia file’ in Instant Messaging oppure altro…);
7. il Partner inizia a registrare la propria traccia vocale (la seconda quindi): anche in questo caso sarebbe indicato un software multitraccia in modo tale da inserire come prima traccia quella del Mixer (musica+voce) e come seconda traccia quella nuova su cui registrare la propria voce;
8. il Partner esporta soltanto la propria traccia vocale ovvero un mp3 di buona qualità (stereo e 128Kbps va bene), quindi questa registrazione non deve includere musica, nessun effetto (riverbero, eco, chorus, etc..) alla voce, possibilmente il meno rumore di fondo possibile ed evitare pesanti soffi e “urla” troppo vicine al microfono;
9. il Partner invia questo file audio al Mixer;
10. il Mixer ora ha tutte le tracce da mixare e dovrebbe fare del suo meglio affinché il file audio finale esportato suoni ottimamente, aggiungendo effetti alle voci, gestire la posizione stereo di ogni traccia, etc…;
11. Condividere il prodotto finale, dipende: generalmente il passo finale consiste nel semplice upload del mp3 finale nel proprio spazio web o altrove… ma nel caso in cui il servizio o la community presuppone che la voce venga registrata direttamente dal microfono dovresti fare in modo che ciò che senti sul PC venga riconosciuto come output di un microfono, quindi che l’esecuzione del file mp3 sul tuo PC risulti in registrazione come l’input di un microfono.

In attesa di maggiori approfondimenti di alcuni dei passi chiave, intanto ecco la procedura almeno in grandi linee.

Quindi l’organizzazione più semplice di tutte è che ciascuno di noi si sceglie la parte del cantante originale o più d’uno, per es. puramnesia fa Michael Jackson e Kenny Loggins e così via. Ma non è escluso che ci si possa anche dividere le parti in altro modo, come volete.

Man mano verrà aggiornata la lista qui nel post, per ora capiamo chi partecipa e se già ha una preferenza per la sua parte.
Tracce vocali:
Ciascun partecipante registrerà una sua traccia vocale cantando sopra una base, unica per tutti. Quindi esporterà un mp3 di buona qualità (128Kbps stereo) contenente solo la propria voce, il resto tutto silenzio: quindi all’inizio di questa traccia vocale ci sarà il silenzio… tutto il tempo dell’inizio della canzone fino a giungere alla propria parte, poi di nuovo silenzi e canterà ovviamente anche il ritornello, come gli pare e piace, basso, alto, in controcanto, una quinta sotto/sopra, basta che sia compatibile con la melodia, quindi non tutti che cantiamo la stessa unica parte ma neanche tutti che andiamo ciascuno per conto proprio eheh sicuramente anche senza grandi pianificazioni verrà spontaneo un coro uniforme.

It is recommended to remove or set to mute this melody track… but how to do it?

If you’re using a generic multimedia player it is impossible to do it immediately, so the advice is to use a Karaoke player like VanBasco, we’ll use it in our examples, or similar software.

One a song is executed in VanBasco, a .mid or .kar file, in the “Midi Output” window you’ll notice a LCD-like display with a list of Midi instruments, the tracks (or better ‘channels’) included in the Midi song. Those actually used in the whole song are bright coloured and when involved in the current playback they show a small bar on the left, moving according to their volume intensity (velocity).
At the leftmost position of a track you’ll find two LEDs (small rectangular coloured lights) turned off.

Well these LEDs are crucial to identify and to silence melody tracks or other unwanted tracks.

Let’s assign a name to these LEDs (they’re actually switch buttons)
- the leftmost one, red when on, is the “Mute” button: you can click this to ignore and exclude the related track from the playback;
- the cyan one -when on- is usually called “Solo”: useful to listen the track ad full volume.

Mute
This is the function to exclude an unwanted track from the playback: this track could be the melody or simply an instrument you don’t want, in case -for instance- you want to both sing and play your own instrumen, like a guitar, piano or other. Since you want to mute a specific track you should know “which one” to remove:
usually the track melody is the channel number 4, so the fourth line in VanBasco track display but it’s not always the fourth, it’s just a common choice but not adopted by all sequencers (who creates midifiles), so in a few cases it’s not immediate to find the correct one… and in these cases the Solo button comes in handy.

Solo
Useful to find a specific intrument track to set as ‘mute’. In some audio software the Solo, the opposite of Mute, excludes completely the other tracks executing only those with the Solo flag on. In VanBasco the solo tracks are just put at full volume leaving the others far in the background. So if you’re searching for a track to silence, you have to activate this cyan LED, one at a time, until you hear clearly the melody track or other you want to exclude.

A different approach would be to simply identify the track by the instrument name in the list.
If you execute a Midi and you hear (clearly by itself, without using the Solo button) a “Pan Flute” set as melody track and in the instruments list you read just one “Pan Flute”, well it’s that one eheh. While if the molody track uses Piano and in the song there’s also a piano playing in the background well you have to try both.

Suggestion:
Since it’s not immediate to identify the tracks to exclude, to avoid repeating the procedure each time you need to mute tracks for the same song, my advice is to save these settings -muted tracks as well as key, tempo, etc…- in VanBasco’s Playlists!

VIRTUAL DUET PROCEDURE

You and your friend should decide who does what, there are two Roles:

• the Mixer
• the Partner

The Mixer should be aware of all the tech-stuff, at least basic audio recording concepts and, in most cases, also know about Midi editing and software. It depends if you just like to sing with your friend or to make the final ‘product’ sound like a good semi-professional recording: of course the experience of the Mixer would make this difference. By the way the important thing is to have fun together.

The duet Partner should simply know how to record his/her vocal track and send it to the Mixer, that’s all.

General Procedure

Basically the procedure steps are:

1. Mixer and Partner agree on the song to sing together so they find the background music (midi-file or other audio) and share this file, same file;
2. a wise choice is to search for a Midi file, especially if the song is not so popular so that no audio karaoke (e.g. mp3/wav) is available; in this case they should also agree on the Key of this song (if the song is too high it is possible to lower the music of the desired amount of semitones). Also the Tempo should be changed but… too much stuff to mention;
3. Mixer -once the choice is made- should start working on the background music with audio editing software, modifying accordingly the midifile (in case of mp3 or other audio file, not much to do), trying to make it sound good;
4. Mixer sings his/her part and records the first vocal track (multitrack recording software is recommended);
5. Mixer exports a composite of background music and vocals, let’s say in mp3 (stereo and at least 128 Kbps), from the audio Project containing all tracks. Not necessarily a final product even a ‘draft‘ file, the important is that the key and tempo of the music are the chosen ones they previously agreed upon;
6. Mixer sends this draft audio file to the Partner (by email as attachment, instant messaging ’send file’, etc…);
7. Partner starts recording his/her vocal track (the second one): also in this case it is good to use a multitrack software so Partner could put the background in track 1 and record a second track with his/her voice only;
8. Partner exports his vocal track only as a good quality mp3 (stereo and 128 Kbps is ok), so: no background music, less background noise as possible, no heavy breath on the mic and no effects (reverb, echo, etc..) on the voice;
9. Partner sends this audio file to the Mixer;
10. Mixer now has all the tracks and should do his/her best to make the final exported audio file sound good, adding effects to the voices, manage the stereo position of each track, etc…;
11. Share the final product, it depends on the purpose: generally the final step is simply to upload the final mp3 somewhere but in case the website, community or service requires you to record directly from the microphone you should let your sound output to act like a mic, so a simple playback of your final mp3 will simulate you singing on the mic.
